Planet vs. Profit: Exploring Corporate Culture
and Its Effects on Climate Change
and Its Effects on Climate Change
Between 1988 and 2015, a mere 100 major companies were responsible for 71% of humanity’s carbon emissions. Because of these large companies’ actions, climate change has become an impending threat, so much so that every day consumers make minor changes in their day-to-day life, such as recycling, carpooling, and investing in reusable products. While these small actions can make a difference, no true, large-scale change can occur unless companies like ExxonMobil, Coal India and BP cut back on their carbon emissions.
In bringing awareness to these corporations, consumers can have a clear understanding of what and who they are supporting. This project utilizes Graphic Design as a means of creating social awareness with the goal of educating consumers, and persuading people to shift their business from pollution-based corporations to companies with more eco-friendly business models.
To achieve my project's goal, I created sample pages of a magazine that would encompass everything I set out to do - educate, persuade and inform consumers about the dangers of large corporations. To go along with this, I created four social media posts to compare and contrast several sustainable and unsustainable businesses. I also created an infographic to display the effects of global warming over time, as well as three billboard designs that would showcase those effects on three major US cities.
My final thesis project consists of a 60-page book that details the full scope of my research and design process from brainstorming, sketches and writing to final deliverables and designs. Click here to view the book in its entirety!
